about the marathon

The Public Theater

Noon to Midnight

Spearheaded by acclaimed director JoAnne Akalaitis, this 12-hour marathon of staged readings by notable performers including Kathleen Chalfant, David Greenspan, and Carmelita Tropicana celebrates the plays of Maria Irene Fornes. Showcasing her little known and rarely produced works alongside more recognized favorites, the marathon partners with THE REST I MAKE UP, Michelle Memran’s documentary on Fornes screening at MoMA (Aug 23-29) to bring awareness to one of America’s greatest and least known playwrights.

Due to the free nature of this event, a ticket reservation does not guarantee access. All seats and reservations are subject to availability and may be overbooked. Seating is general admission on a first come, first served basis.

about fornes

Winner of nine Obie Awards, Maria Irene Fornes has written over 40 plays, many of which she directed, and is regarded as one of the most significant writing teachers of our time. Off-Broadway’s Signature Theatre devoted its entire 1999-2000 season to her work, and her epic What of the Night? was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. At the vanguard of the nascent Off-Off Broadway experimental theater movement in NYC, the incomparable Cuban-American playwright is often referred to as American theater’s “Mother Avant-Garde.”

But despite her remarkable contributions, most still do not know her name.

A headline on the cover of The Village Voice once read, “Irene Fornes is America’s Great Unknown Playwright”.
